In the late 2000s, Realco ventured into the restoration of multiple derelict properties in Birgu and Senglea, which formed part of the rehabilitation project of the Government of Malta. These premises are still currently leased out as catering establishments to date. This restoration project has transformed this historical site into a cluster of contemporary restaurants and offices. Across the harbour on the side of Isla, further investment occurred through the restoration of a five-star boutique hotel – merging the classical with the modern in its design. The hotel integrates high vaulted ceilings and large traditional staircases with unobstructed sea views and sizeable entertainment areas – perfect for wedding receptions and other entertainment functions, overlooking the Grand Harbour. This hotel is currently leased to a prominent German hotel-operator, trading under the name of ‘Cugo Gran Macina Grand Harbour’. The hotel has received multiple awards for its design and concept, amongst which the Heritage Prize by Din l-Art Helwa (2018) as well as the European Prix Versailles UNESCO World Architecture and Design Award (2019).
